Furnace Build Project, Spain

As part of Lulu’s QEST training last summer, she took on the role as Project Officer for a large scale furnace building project in Cordoba, Spain. This was in collaboration with PEGG (The Post Disciplinary and Experimental Glass Group), Newcastle University Students, and glass blowers Elliot Walker, Bethany Wood and Rosie Power.

Together, they built a wood fired furnace from scratch (working with clay), based on ancient methodologies - to fire and blow glass (getting up to 1100°C). Here she was able to learn about traditional furnace design, fuel efficiency, and be part of a larger community project - building on her portfolio for international collaborations and growing contacts within the glassmaking world.

Lulu was also able to test some of her own glass recipes working with materials local to the region such as wine lees and barilla ashes.
